Leaf:
Palmately compound
Opposite (occasionally whorled in 3's)
Orbicular
Aromatic

Leaflet:
Elliptical, ovate, lanceolate
Deeply incised, sometimes to the mid-rib

Stem: rigid with short stiff hairs

Flowers:
Terminal panicles
Blue, lavender, inconspicuous
Slight fragrance
Fruit is small, berry-like, and has a calyx

In a famine the seeds can be washed to remove the bitter element, then ground to flour.
